What is an Open Textbook?

Open textbooks are textbooks released under a Creative Commons, or similar, license. They are often written and published by faculty, with the support of universities or new commercial companies. What is a Learning Object Repository?

A Learning Object Repository is an online storage location/digital library of learning objects (or links to learning objects). The learniing objects ( modules, videos, images, books) are intended to be freely shared, adapted, or reused. Many Learning Object Repositories include open textbooks

 What Is Open Education?

Open education involves expanding educational opportunities by encouraging the open sharing and recombination of educational resources. Institutions and individuals are increasingly sharing open digital learning and teaching resources over the internet without cost.

  • College Open Textbooks
    College Open Textbooks Collaborative is a collection of educational non-profit and for-profit organizations, affiliated with more than 200 colleges, focused on driving awareness and adoptions of open textbooks at more than 2000 community and other two-year colleges. There is a listing of available open textbooks by subject, as well as other resources. College Open Textbooks has peer-reviewed more than 100 open textbooks for use in community college courses and identified more than 550.
  • Open Textbook Catalog
    University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development has created this catalog of open textbooks, created by faculty at various colleges and universities
  • Connexions
    Connexions is a collection of free scholarly materials, including reusable modules
  • E-Books Directory
    E-Books Directory is a daily growing list of freely downloadable ebooks, documents and lecture notes found all over the internet.
  • Flatworld Knowledge
    You can browse a catalog of over 100+ open access textbooks. Textbooks can be customized.
  • Free TechBooks
    Free online computer science, engineering and programming books, textbooks and lecture notes
  • Merlot
    Searchable learning object repository of peer-reviewed online teaching and learning materials; includes some open textbooks
  • Open Access Textbooks Project
    The Open Access Textbooks Project is a two-year initiative to create a sustainable model for the discovery, production, and dissemination of open textbooks. Funded by a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE)

  • Moodle
    Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is a free web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites.
  • Sakai
    Sakai is a community of academic institutions, commercial organizations and individuals who work together to develop a common Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE). The Sakai CLE is a free, community source, educational software platform distributed under the Educational Community License (a type of open source license).
